#TTT The Terrible Tobacco Tale

- tobacco prevention

The Terrible Tobacco Tale® is a new board game specifically designed to be a key element in a concerted effort to prevent young people from starting to use tobacco, both smoking and smokeless tobacco. The game starts with a story about a girl, Glenda, with a dream. In the dream a large rabbit invents a new product. Scientists find that the new product, Rabbit Pills, is extremely dangerous, and they try to convince the boss of the company not to produce it. During the game, the players have to compare the bad effects of Rabbit Pills with tobacco. Despite the fact that thousands will get sick and die from Rabbit Pills, players find that tobacco is even worse! The boss's reaction is that he wants to produce Rabbit Pills and make a lot of money. After all, he reasons, it is much less dangerous than tobacco, which is used by millions of people. Glenda, of course is very upset and tries to convince the boss not to make Rabbit Pills.

Players identify with Glenda and are strongly against the production of Rabbit Pills, which of course, is much less dangerous than tobacco. In this way, the students focus on the extreme dangers of tobacco use. Students learn many facts about tobacco, including the deadly diseases that it causes. The facts presented in the game have been carefully researched to be accurate.

The game also focuses on the physical attractiveness issues, such as bad breath, discolored teeth, and reduction of athletic ability, in addition to health dangers.

The post-game discussion, outlined in the teacher's booklet, links the game with real life and helps the students to further internalize their conclusions. The teacher does not need specialized knowledge of tobacco and its hazards in order to use the game successfully. The teacher always serves as the facilitator, never lecturing the students. This game will get the students' attention and will result in greater attitude and behavior change than conventional learning designs.
