One Step at a Time® is a cooperative, non-competitive educational board game that helps children learn how to make good decisions. The game box contains two games that use the same board. One game is for pre K, K, and older non-readers. The second game is for reading first graders and second graders. The cards in the first game depict activities which the players discuss and jointly decide if they are appropriate or inappropriate for kids their age. Everything is depicted pictorially, so that non-readers can play the game without the assistance of an adult. The second game works similarly, except that, as in most games, the players read the cards and then discuss the activities described in the cards. The activities in the game designed for older students are more complex, in keeping with the players' age and grade levels. This process promotes effective interpersonal skills, cooperative learning skills, and good decision making skills.
Players discuss and make decisions about the activities depicted in the cards. Good decisions lift them one step at a time up the staircase to the "Circle of Stars." On the way, with bad luck, they could wind up in the "Mud Puddle."
